No destination produces a wider spread of quotes than the Maldives. The same seven letters cover a three-star island of buffet queues and a private residence with its own reef, and the internet quotes them side by side as if they were the same holiday. They are not. What follows is the honest arithmetic of the version worth flying for — the one with a villa over its own turquoise, a seaplane at golden hour, and nobody else in the photograph.
What to realistically expect
For a genuinely luxurious Maldives honeymoon — five nights or so in an overwater villa at a resort we would put our name to, meals and transfers included — journeys begin at around ₹3,00,000 per couple. Pool villas at the islands the magazines write about — Soneva Jani's slides into the lagoon, Gili Lankanfushi's Crusoe residences, Six Senses Laamu — typically carry the journey upwards of ₹5,00,000 per couple. And at the outer edge — Cheval Blanc Randheli, a private residence, or a night in The Muraka's bedroom five metres beneath the sea — the Maldives will graciously absorb whatever you offer it.
The Maldives is not expensive. The Maldives you are imagining is expensive — and it is worth being honest about which one you are booking.
What actually moves the number
The villa, precisely
Beach villa, overwater villa, overwater pool villa — each step is a meaningful one. Our counsel: the overwater villa is the point of the Maldives. Couples who economise on it invariably spend the trip gazing at the ones they didn't take.
How you arrive
Islands near Malé are a speedboat ride; the far atolls need a seaplane or domestic flight. The seaplane is not a transfer, it is the opening scene of the honeymoon — forty minutes of atolls scattered like brushstrokes. Where possible, we route you over it.
The meal plan
Resort dining is superb and priced accordingly à la carte. Half-board or full-board, arranged at booking rather than on the island, is almost always the wiser structure — it turns the trip's largest variable into a known.
The season
December to April is the dry, glassy peak — and priced like it. May to October is greener and softer-priced, with brief dramatic rains and the same water. September couples enjoy the same villa for meaningfully less than New Year couples do.
The length
Four to five nights is the sweet spot. The Maldives is an island of stillness, not sightseeing; couples who book nine nights often tell us the last two belonged somewhere else — which is why we so often pair it with Sri Lanka's tea country, an hour away.
Where never to economise
Two places. The first is the resort itself: the gap between a good island and a great one is the entire holiday, and no villa category at a mediocre resort fixes it. The second is the arrival: a honeymoon that begins with a six-hour wait in Malé for a cheaper transfer slot has been economised in exactly the wrong place. Fly direct from your metro, be met airside, and be barefoot by mid-afternoon — that is the shape of a honeymoon done properly.
