What made it this trip, and no other
The anniversary at sea
A sunset catamaran from the V&A Waterfront with champagne — the set-piece the whole journey builds towards.
Table Mountain at sunset
The cableway timed for the last light, after an afternoon cooking Cape Malay spices in Bo-Kaap.
The Franschhoek Wine Tram
To Haute Cabrière, whose cellar is cut into the mountain, and the lawns of Boschendal.
Featherbed by private ferry
Across to the reserve at the Knysna Heads for a guided walk and lunch.
A dare, optional
The 216-metre Bloukrans bungy — or, for the less inclined, the Tsitsikamma treetop zipline.
Why we built it this way
December is the Cape at its best, so the safari is a two-night opener and the Cape gets the time.
An early draft had five-hour drives in both directions along the coast. The final version flies Cape Town to George instead — we never put two long drives back to back.
Mornings are protected throughout: the dawn drive is optional because the vehicle is private, flights leave at midday, and the dawn-only balloon became an afternoon ride through the vines.
The hotels follow the couple: the Sabi Sand for the best leopard viewing in Africa, the quiet Atlantic Seaboard for the first Cape Town stay, and the last two nights at The Silo above Zeitz MOCAA — steps from where the anniversary catamaran leaves.
