What made it this trip, and no other
Rome by golf cart
The Colosseum, the Forum and the city's hills on a private golf cart — the gentle way to cover a lot of Rome in a day.
A vintage Fiat morning
A photographer, a vintage Fiat 500 and Rome's most picturesque streets: the honeymoon album, made on day three.
Lunch among the vines
A day out to San Gimignano with a vineyard lunch, then back to Florence to cook Tuscan dishes together — and eat them.
The lake to yourselves
A private boat to Bellagio and Varenna, with lunch by the water. In December, the lake is almost empty.
Milan from the rooftops
The Duomo's terraces among the spires, before a final night in Italy.
Why we built it this way
December is Italy's quietest month in the cities, and the light is bright and clear. We put most of the time in Rome, where there is most to see, and let the journey slow as it moves north.
The one adjustment winter demands is Lake Como: most of its grand lakeside hotels close from November to March. So we base the couple in Como town, at a hotel that stays open, and take them out on the water privately.
Trains where trains are faster, private cars where they are calmer — Rome to Florence by high-speed rail, Florence to the lake by road.
