Lofoten Islands

Aurora over fishing villages

OVERVIEW

Granite peaks rising straight out of the sea, red fishing cabins on the rocks, and the northern lights from September to early April.

Lofoten is the connoisseur's Arctic: quieter than Tromsø and more beautiful than almost anywhere. We base guests at Holmen Lofoten in Sørvågen, small and food-led, or in the premium fishermen's cabins at Hamnøy. Our favourite week is late August, when the ridge hikes are warm in the afternoon and it is dark enough at midnight for early aurora.

◆

Late August

Hiking weather by day and the first aurora by night — the most under-sold week of the Norwegian year.

◆

Holmen Lofoten

An intimate, food-led hotel whose guest-chef residencies are an event in themselves.

◆

An honest note

Lofoten is the most beautiful aurora backdrop on earth, and one of the cloudiest. We pair it with a second aurora location.

Best time to goLate August to mid-September for hiking and early aurora; February and March for snow and the northern lights.

A SAMPLE JOURNEY

How a few days might unfold

A starting point, not a package — every day is shaped around you.

Day 1

To the islands

Fly via Oslo to Evenes or the small Leknes airstrip, then drive into the islands.

Day 2

Reine & Hamnøy

The villages, the red cabins and the peaks reflected in the fjords.

Day 3

The ridge

A guided hike above the sea in the afternoon, dinner at Holmen, and a watch for the lights after dark.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, Answered

Will we see the northern lights?

Nothing is guaranteed. Lofoten is the most beautiful place to see them and one of the cloudiest, so we pair it with Tromsø or Alta to give you better odds.

How do we get there?

Via Oslo to Evenes or Leknes, then by road. We build in a night in Oslo or Tromsø to protect the connection.
