Douro Valley

Terraced vines above a river

OVERVIEW

Europe's most romantic wine region: terraced vineyards falling to the Douro river, old port houses, and a September harvest you can join.

The Douro is where clients who have done Bordeaux and Tuscany find something new. The vineyards climb the valley in steep terraces above the river, and the quintas pour their own ports and reds. Six Senses Douro Valley, in a restored 19th-century manor above the river, is our anchor. In harvest season, guests can join the picking and the traditional foot-treading of the grapes.

◆

◆

Porto to Lisbon

We route Porto, the Douro, then Lisbon or Comporta, so the journey never doubles back.

Best time to goSeptember to early October for the harvest; May and June for green vines and quieter roads.

Day 2

Into the valley

A private drive up the river to the vineyards and your quinta.

Day 3

The harvest

A morning in the vines and the stone lagares, then a long lunch at the estate.

Day 4

Onward

South to Lisbon or the beaches of Comporta, and the flight home from Lisbon.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, Answered

When should we book for the harvest?

Early. Six Senses Douro Valley and the best quintas sell out for late September nine to twelve months ahead.

Can we combine it with Lisbon?

That is how we usually build it: fly into Porto, travel through the Douro to Lisbon or Comporta, and fly home from Lisbon.
